6 ways to overcome obstacles and achieve what you want in life

Lisa Stephenson teaches tips to overcome obstacles

Imagine what life would be like if you could proactively manage the road blocks getting in the way of your personal version of success and happiness.

I am yet to meet someone who had a life without obstacles getting in the way. We all have our fair share of them. Most people would like something in their life to be different. They might want to be financially secure or to have a happier relationship.

I’ve met people with great ideas for a new business and others who have a life goal to run a marathon. But to begin with, all they can see are the challenges to achieving these aspirations.

It’s so important for all of us to understand and trust that we are capable of being more than we are right now.  Then you can proactively create the change you need to live a life that makes you want to jump out of bed in the morning.

You will need to be prepared to take some risks, make some mistakes and learn some stuff about yourself that you didn’t know. Then, on the other side of the obstacles, is a more resilient version of you; a version of you who can step up, take ownership and drive your own success, whatever that means for you.

If you are someone who has been having the same conversation with yourself about what you need to do next, it might just be time to pay attention. Get focused and consciously overcome the ‘noise’ that has been preventing you from moving forward.

Here are some strategies for being solution focused and achieving what you really want in your life:

1. Play and plan big

This is your one shot to live an amazing adventure. Be ambitious in your dreams.  Consider what you want to be able to say about this life when you are 80 years old and sitting on the veranda reflecting on the experiences you have had. Successful people aren’t necessarily the smartest or best educated; they are those who are brave enough to own what they want.  What are you really capable of?

2. Make yourself your most import project

Investing in you is the most important investment you will ever make. Successful people think strategically about how they are living and where they are heading. They set deadlines and consult experts who will support their success. They often create a vision board, identify blockers and review their progress. How can you make you, and your future, a priority?

3. Do what other people aren’t prepared to do

The world is full of people who start stuff but never follow through. Successful people do what’s required. They keep going even when it’s hard and they don’t want to. Don’t wait and don’t give in. When your motivation has passed, it will be your commitment that keeps you going. Are you prepared to do what’s required?

4. Get uncomfortable

It is true, the greatest learning happens in discomfort. To know what you are really capable of, you have to test your resilience and capabilities. You don’t know what you don’t know about you yet. You are an ever-evolving complex person with so many things to learn and that is where your potential sits. Intentionally look for new experiences and meet people out of your network.  When was the last time you felt really uncomfortable?

5. Be resolute, committed and courageous

The reality is it’s unlikely anyone else can create success for you. There really is only one you on this planet. No single other person looks the same as you or has your beliefs or experiences. Put your big girl (or boy) pants on and enjoy the ride of being you.  As a coach, I’ve never met anyone who is an overnight success.  Be brave on all the days you can manage it.

6. It will be hard, but it will also be amazing and what you deserve

Do what’s required to smash those obstacles out of the park! It’s the perfect time to do the work on you and create your next chapter.
