Lou’s Place, a unique community-based refuge for women in Sydney, needs your help. Here at 50sowhat we are passionate about helping incredible charities such as Lou’s Place. If you can help please do, it means the world to the many women they support.
On June 7-8 it’s holding its major fundraiser for the year, Lou’s Closet, in which donations of good quality pre-loved clothing (and new clothing) and accessories are sold to assist with essential operating costs.
This year’s event is being held at the Manly Golf Club.
Started in 1999 at a modest Kings Cross terrace, Lou’s Place receives no government funding in its mission to help women, many of whom are facing issues of homelessness, domestic violence, mental health or addiction.
The drop-in centre’s management, the Marmalade Foundation, tells us that the key to the success of the closet fundraiser has been the quality of the donations, which have bolstered the coffers by almost $450,000 over the last 11 years.
The big request again in 2021 is for clothing – and accessories – in either new, or near new condition. Please launder or dry-clean items before donating.
“The Closet has established itself offering high quality and clean items so we need to maintain this standard,” says a spokeswoman.
“The other source we also like to get our clothing from is designers, businesses in clothing retail, who may have a whole lot of clothing left over from the previous season and they want to move it on.
“We love this when we get those calls to come and collect.”
Organisers will also come and collect any items you have in your wardrobe to donate, but also have a number of drop-off points below:
