Effortless style that pays homage to a rich culture

I first found the Indian-born and raised designer Kopal (she was given only the one name, which means ‘newborn leaf’ in Sanskrit) on Instagram. I was drawn to her beautiful fabrics, the incredible images, the limited edition dresses, and the considerate approach to clothing. I had to find out more. Here is her story.

The label by the same name is a reflection of Kopal’s own life, which embodies the joys of a simpler lifestyle. Now based in the idyllic coastal town of Byron Bay, Kopal’s slow and intentional approach to life breathes an ease into each and every garment.

Seasonally shifting, like the ebb and flow of the tide, the pieces all reflect an ethereal wearability and worldly point of view. Its purpose is to allow each wearer to comfortably express their individuality, their passion, and “showcase their travelling soul”.

The beautiful Sur Dress

Produced in small quantities, the brand Kopal takes a more considerate approach to clothing that is worlds away from today’s mass market and fast-fashion.

Made using sustainable, traditional methods, and the highest quality cotton and natural dyes, Kopal pays homage to a rich culture and heritage of craft, developed for centuries by generations of skilled artisans, passed down within their homes in the villages of India. Concerned by the increasing loss of these traditions and techniques, Kopal produces each collection with an ecosystem made up of India’s finest makers, crafters, and artisans. Their indigenous skills, which would otherwise be lost, are preserved by adapting them to contemporary requirements, thereby integrating them into the new economy.

Spending months each year in India sourcing and partnering with socially responsible enterprises, creative director Kopal ensures that every angle of the label has equal parts style and heart.

The label pulls from Kopal’s keen eye for design, and her passion for sustaining the ancient traditions of India. When Kopal designs, she takes us on a journey. From the vivid colours and wild energy of her native India, to the clean lines and luxury of the New York fashion industry, and throughout the sights seen on her travels through Bolivia, Peru, Brazil, Ecuador and Morocco.

Through her lens, we are transported. The result is a timeless, travel-inspired woman’s lifestyle brand. Kopal is a collection of authentic and sustainable lifestyle clothes that celebrate effortless style, impeccable craftsmanship, and the preservation of traditional methods.

Designer, traveller, and passionate advocate of the sustainability of artisan craft, creative director Kopal is a force. Raised in India, Kopal found inspiration everywhere. From the vibrant urban street hustle, through to the colourful and rich cultural traditions embedded in everyday life. Sparked with a passion for design, she found herself in New York City attending the Fashion Institute of Technology where she honed her skills in design, styling, photography and fabric selection.

Finally, after 14 years working in the fashion industry for notable brands like Bottega Veneta, Ralph Lauren, and Converse, she decided to launch her own label, Kopal.

I am so pleased she did, because having these pieces in your wardrobe is a privilege.
