Flashback Friday: Whitney Houston’s I Wanna Dance With Somebody

whitney wants to dance

After the phenomenal success of her self-titled debut album, Whitney Houston, in 1985, could anyone deliver a follow-up as good?

You bet she could.

I Wanna Dance With Somebody, the very first single off her second studio album, Whitney, soared to even greater heights in 1987 than any of her previous number ones.

Despite many critics dismissing it as a lazy reworking of How Will I Know by the same writing team of George Merrill and Shannon Rubicam, fans didn’t seem to care one bit.

The 80’s anthem was a massive hit for one of the greatest voices of our generation, becoming her most successful single at the time. It reached number one in 14 countries, including Australia where it topped the charts for five straight weeks.

After Whitney’s tragic death in 2012, the single returned to the Billboard Hot 100 debuting at number 35 the same week I Will Always Love You re-entered at number 7, giving Whitney two posthumous Top 40 hits in the US.
