Let’s pee honest

Let’s talk about wee leaks. Bladder incontinence and those little leaks we get from time to time. Yes, those. If you feel yourself starting to blush while reading this, then you need to read on.

Firstly, you should take comfort in knowing that you are most definitely not alone. There are a lot of us dealing with the same issues and secondly, there is help at hand.

I have made no secret of the fact that a lot has changed since hitting perimenopause/menopause. Whether sneezing, jumping, holding on, running upstairs, laughing out loud, or coughing, it’s all over rover for me, and let’s not talk about star jumps. I have been known to spend half of my Pilates class either clenching or crossing my legs and hoping for the best.

I used to spend my Pilates class clenching and hoping for the best.

It felt like my wee leaks happened overnight. Boom, I’d be walking along, sneeze and bam, out came a bit of wee. The first time it happened, I was a bit taken aback. I wondered what the hell was going on, and scampered home pretty quickly to change. I seriously thought it was a one-off.

It definitely wasn’t a one off, it appeared my little leaks were my new normal. A wee leak here, and a wee leak there. It started with a sneeze, then a cough, a laugh and so forth. I even stopped jogging because I was worried about leaks.

I shared what was happening with me on Instagram stories because I wanted to open up the conversation and I wanted to connect with others going through the same thing. I couldn’t believe the number of messages I received. I got hundreds of them.

I can jump again without worrying about leaks.

It’s nothing to be embarrassed about, it’s nothing to feel ashamed about. So many women were depressed, sad and felt out of control because they were having leaks. Many felt isolated. It was heartbreaking. Let me say this out loud: you are not alone, you are in control, and you have nothing to feel ashamed about. We’re in this together.

I love TENA liners especially if I am heading out for a walk or running around. Not bulky, you don’t even notice you are wearing them.

Firstly, there are products on the market such as TENA liners (which I use and love). They make me feel confident that if I squeeze, I have protection. They are also comfortable and slim, and you can’t even tell you are wearing them, and they are great under workout gear. There is also underwear. TENA do the most incredible, and actually quite sexy leak-proof undies. I have the black with lace on the sides. They are not bulky; they feel incredible on and are very flattering. They come in a range of great colours black, nude and the most incredible pink. You can confidently wear these under any garment and feel great.

TENA underwear is comfortable, it looks great and most of all it helps provide a sense of security. They look great on to.

If the problem gets worse, please see your doctor or incontinence specialist. In the meantime, use products and resources available. You can buy TENA online, or from your supermarket. There are so many products that are there to help you feel secure, happy and confident.

I have always prided myself on being open and honest, warts and all. It’s so important that we open up the uncomfortable conversations, so as a group of midlife women we can connect, talk, support, and more importantly, create a community that share this stage of our lives openly and honestly.

We are lucky, our parents didn’t have the resources, support and companies like TENA who are helping us open up the conversation and create positivity, awareness, empowerment and much needed community.
