Was Moxi and Broadband laser treatment really worth it?

I had Moxi laser to my face, neck, and chest, with BBL also to my chest. The reason I chose this treatment (apart from being guided by my doctor) is because I have had BBL before and I have seen the results, and Moxi I have heard exceptionally good reviews about.

I wanted to address my pigmentation, skin texture and tone and on my chest, my redness, veins, and sun damage.

I decided to do a daily diary during my recovery because when I read procedure reviews, I want to know every little detail – even the gory ones. I wanted to be prepared with all the knowledge I could.

So, with that in mind. Here is my diary of BBL and Moxi Laser. I hope you find it helpful and informative.

Day of treatment

My treatment is with Martine, from Muse Clinic – see short video clip below for snapshot of what was involved.. Muse Clinic is run by Dr Stephen Lowe and has been the only clinic I have had lasers, here in Australia.

I trust them, they always make me feel comfortable and I feel safe, secure, and looked after. They are extremely knowledgeable, processional, yet friendly.

My treatment takes two hours, which allows for numbing cream to work. Martine starts with my BBL to my chest, which is best described as feeling ‘spicey.’ A little hot and stingy. The numbing cream is applied after the BBL. The Moxi treatment I find pleasant (which is NOT normal). The numbing cream does its thing. However, directly afterwards it is bloody hot! My face and chest felt like they were on fire for about 10 minutes. Now, I have to say, this is not the norm. Most people feel hot for at least an hour afterwards.

My face and chest are very red, but I feel comfortable.

I have a cooling device throughout the whole process, and gas, which makes everything comfortable and I definitely needed the cooling device and I was sucking back the gas like there was no tomorrow.

My face feels tight, and I can start to see the MENS (they look like sand – little dark dots) appear on my face.

For the next seven days I need to use a gentle cleanser and moisturising only. No actives at all and for my chest area, it is 10 days.

Post treatment

Day one

Last night was not as bad as I thought. My face was pulsating a bit and getting really swollen, so I started walking around, and doing some facial (light) massage, which helped. I did this as I tend to swell a lot. I had an okay sleep, as I woke up a few times, probably because I was worried that I would wake up in the morning looking like my head was about to explode.

I am happy to say, I only have a small about of swelling, but the redness has come up and all the sun damage is showing up, which is great. My face feels tight and feels like rough sandpaper. It is not sore or uncomfortable at all.

My chest is bright red but comfortable.

I read a few forums saying people could go back to work the day after. There is no way I would go to the office looking the way I do. I can do work from home, but I would not be keen to go into an office today. So, if you are wanting this laser done, allow some down time.

Day two

It’s itchy but I don’t want to cause scarring. Image: 50 So What

My skin is tighter today and much redder, however it does not hurt at all. It does feel dry. The temptation to itch it is high, but I do not, as I do not want any scarring. I slept well last night and was not phased getting out and about. Last night I did go for a walk just before it was dark, and I did get a few odd looks! My neighbour said, “What the hell have you done now.” He is in his nineties and is always in the elevator after I have had something done to myself. He thinks it is hilarious.

Day three

The hub is now slightly grossed out. Image: 50 So What

My skin was so itchy last night. My god, I had to control the urge to scratch my face. I have woken up today, my skin is still dark and very much rough sandpaper to touch. But bits of skin are starting to flake off. I couldn’t be happier. The bits that I can see are beautiful glowing fresh skin. Now I’m starting to get excited.

My instructions from my doctor were under no circumstances, do not to rub or peel the skin off, I must wait until it flakes off (so hard!). The hub is slightly grossed out. I was worried hugging my friend after coffee, that I’d get dead skin all over her (she assured me I didn’t).

Day four

The skin on my face is already glowing. Image: 50 So What

My skin feels great today. My face is still a bit itchy, but most of the skin is flaking off now, which is brilliant. The skin on my face is glowing. My chest is still blotchy and red; however, I am aware this will take at least five/six more days.

Day six

The brown spots I was concerned about have all but gone. Image: 50 So What

I am so happy with my face. The skin looks incredible. It is glowing, the texture feels great and the brown spots I was concerned about have all but gone. My chest and neck will take longer, but I am already seeing the reduced redness in my chest.

What I really think about this treatment

I bloody love it! It’s not cheap (see prices below), but I can see the difference it has made to my skin.

My skin has been a work in progress (too much sun when I was younger) and this treatment has helped it glow, it has helped with the sunspots, the overall appearance, and my results will continue to improve, as this treatment also helps with collagen stimulation.

I am absolutely chuffed with the results so far.

Downtime – You will look red, with little black dots (like sand all over your face) and your skin is very dry. Post day three, I used a tinted bb cream with sun block (zinc) to cover my face and I felt very comfortable getting out and about. The skin will start to flake off at about day four for the face and day seven-ten for the chest area. I was puffy for about three days but that subsided quickly.

Preparation – As with any procedure, no matter how big or small, eat well, exercise, limit alcohol and do anything you can to ensure a quick recovery after your procedure. A healthy mind and body will always heal faster. Give yourself as much opportunity to make this a good experience. Being in a good mental state of mind is imperative. Just know, you may look a fright for a few days. I always expect the worst (like I did with this) but was pleasantly surprised.

Choosing your doctor – Go to someone you trust, someone that has been recommended by someone you trust, always look at reviews and credentials. I went to Martine, from Muse Clinic in Crowsnest, Sydney who I highly recommended. Martine is professional, caring, particular (a must) and treats every patient differently. It is not a ‘one size fits all’ here. We are all unique and our needs are unique. This clinic is owned by Dr Lowe, which means unlike some clinics you can receive the highest quality of care and pain management if needed. I only needed gas and medical grade numbing for Moxi – BBL when I have it by itself, I do not need anything. I also took a Panadol half an hour prior.

Pain factor with Moxi and BBL– Moxi is a 3/10 with medical grade numbing cream and gas. Some patients feel very hot afterwards, like their skin is on fire. I felt this for about 5-10 minutes but was fine after that. I do have a high pain threshold. Overall, I found it pleasant (I must be psysho!). BBL is a 3/10 as well (I have had this many times) and requires no pain relief. It can be spicey – like little zaps to the skin and you can feel a bit hot afterwards. I had a cooling device during my procedure, which was fantastic.

Cost

Moxi face – $750

Moxi face, neck, chest – $1750

BBl chest – $475

Normal activities – I could still work, I just worked from home for a few days. I could go for a walk at night (I did it under the cover of darkness) as I still wanted to get some fresh air and light exercise. Only light exercise after Moxi for the first few days and NO sun exposure all at. You must wear sunblock, a hat and coverup.

After day four it was back to normal for me.

Do not stress – you may look red and think, what the hell have I done. You do get (with Moxi) little black spots all over, this is normal and is what they refer to as MENS. Give yourself a good five-seven days with Moxi on the face and 10 days on the chest, and the redness and MENS should be gone by then. With BBL, I was a bit red and had dark spots for about a week.

Skin care – you need to ensure you take very good care of your skin while out in the sun. Always keep it covered and use good protection. You must keep out of the sun, especially after a laser treatment. Failing to do so may need to darker pigmentation developing. During the healing process, I used a gentle cleanser and moisturisers. NO active products at all for 10 days after the treatment. The two products I used were Ultraceuticals Ultra Calming Cleanser and Ultraceuticals Ultra Calming Moisturiser Cream.

Continued improvement – be aware that this treatment, while you will see good results straight afterward the healing time (ensure you have before and after photos taken so you can see the difference) the skin will continue to improve over time.

Is it worth it?

YES! I recommend Martine and Dr Lowe from Muse Clinic in Crowsnest. I am beyond happy with the results.

This treatment may not be suitable for everyone. Please see a professional if you are interested. Do your research, ask questions, and go into it with all the knowledge you can. My experience was a good one, and based on that, I highly recommend it.

Feel free to email me on jo@50sowhat.com.au if you have any questions.

Suggestion – before you make any decisions on laser, please make sure you see a doctor, and discuss options that are suitable for your skin type and your concerns. Some lasers do not suit certain skin types and can also make some skin conditions worse. You need to get your laser done by an experienced technician/doctor/nurse.

One month post

I bloody love the results! My skin is glowing. Do I look 30? Of course not, that was never my objective, but does my skin look healthy and glowing at 53? You bet it does. I am obsessed with Moxi laser.
