Why does Michael Bolton keep parodying his talent to stay popular?

Michael Bolton back in Sydney

The big hair and the power ballad; no one did it with more unabashed cheesy panache than Michael Bolton in the late 1980s and early 90s.

How Am I Supposed to Live Without You, Sittin’ On (The Dock of the Bay) and How Can We Be Lovers? to name but a few of the saccharin sweet hits he smashed out in that golden, Grammy Award-winning era.

Okay, so not all of us rushed out in our shiny new Ford Falcons to buy his singles, but we could all sing along when no was looking. Michael was the king of the catchy chorus for the best part of a decade.

Fast forward 30-odd years and where do we find Mr Bolton? – taking the piss out of himself in the hope it’ll help him stay relevant, again.

This time he’s in Sydney to partner with digital audiobook giant Audible to create a musical send-up of his 1993 smash hit Said I Loved You … But I Lied.

Michael Bolton keeps taking the piss

Inspired by research showing one third of Aussies would lie about reading a book, the new ‘song’ reworks the original lyrics into Said I Read You … But I Lied and features silk robes, classic throwback hair styles, sweeping Sydney Harbour views and a pet lizard.

It’s increasingly familiar territory for the now 64-year-old former pop icon – the lampooning part that is, not the lizards.

His 2011 Saturday Night Live Jack Sparrow video spoof with US comedy troupe the Lonely Island has had more than 178 million views on YouTube at last count.

More recently, his 2017 tongue-in-cheek Netflix special Michael Bolton’s Big, Sexy Valentine’s Day Special in all its raucous, smutty glory was another surprise hit. Later that same year he belted out a humorous Game of Thrones retro theme song for Screen Junkies, a popular US online movie mag and YouTube channel with millennials.

But real fans rejoice: the real deal is returning to our shores later in June 2018 for an actual bona fide tour, Michael’s first here since 2015.

Australia still loves you Michael Bolton….and that’s no lie.
